andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz The four men who dived into a freezing Nelson creek to rescue two people from a submerged car have been recognised for their bravery, with a nomination in the Pride of New Zealand awards. Kyle Paki Paki, Philip Walker, Adam Black and Gary Miller had never met before that cold Saturday last July and barely since, but their combined actions saved two lives and earned praise from the fire service, police and the rescued people’s family, who all labelled them “heroes”. They each said the nomination, from a Nelson fire fighter, is humbling. The rescue started when a car carrying Janice (Jan) Fa’avae, 68, her husband Filemoni (Phil), 69, and grandson Ali Fa’avae-Mika, 2, veered off the road and plunged into Saltwater Creek, near Port Nelson. Kyle, who saw the car go over the side of the bank, jumped out of his ute and dived straight in the water, pulling Phil out of the car. The rescued man immediately motioned that his grandson was in the car and Kyle went back down, frantically trying to smash the car window to get to little Ali. He eventually broke the window with a tyre iron and after rising to the surface for another breath of air went back down and pulled Ali out of the back seat. By this time the toddler was unconscious. British tourist Adam Black was out for a run and dived into the water to help Kyle pull Ali to the bank. Then Philip Walker, who was driving past, stopped to help Kyle and Adam try to free Jan from the car. After several dives, Philip

Jan tragically died at the scene, with a coroner later concluding she had a “medical event” before the car drove into the creek. But the actions of the four men saved the lives of her husband and grandson. Nelson fire fighter Craig Davies says the actions of the men undoubtedly saved two

lives and that’s why he nominated them for the bravery and heroism award. “I saw the awards being advertised and I thought it was perfect for these guys. What they did that day was pretty special and an extreme act of bravery in my opinion.” Kyle says looking back the day still haunts him but knowing that his actions saved two people does give him a sense of pride. “Looking back, it’s still a bit of a blur but it doesn’t change the fact of how I think we

did that day. I haven’t talked a lot about it since the accident. It still sits a little uncomfortably with me, especially this kind of stuff but I am proud to have done what we did do to save a life.” The Pride of New Zealand awards, which are run by the New Zealand Herald and supported by Nelson Weekly, aim to recognise the efforts of everyday Kiwis, who make a real difference in their communities.

Being dumped with 33 unwanted cats and kittens, and threats of euthanasia by cat owners has forced the closure of a local cat rescue trust. Amanda Lee has been operating the Nelson Cat Rescue and Rehoming Trust for the past four years on top of a full-time job, but she made the decision to close the charitable trust after “the fun had been taken out” of it by irresponsible cat owners. “I had over 33 cats and kittens dumped on me two days prior to Christmas and at that time I still had more people wanting to give me more cats, but I had to turn them away,” Amanda says. “But it’s just the attitude of people. They

have a problem, they want to get rid of their cat and they try to push that problem on to someone else.” Amanda had funded the charitable trust herself because she wanted to help rehome cats that were in need. “I didn’t want to become a dumping ground for lazy people who haven’t bothered to desex their cat, or have a cat then decided they don’t want the poor thing, and that’s basically what happened. The people I wanted to help were the genuine ones.” Amanda says there had been

threats of euthanasia from cat owners. “They said they’d drown the cat and it’s [my] fault. There were a couple that were actually quite horrible, nasty on the phone. Some people are really nice and understanding, but you just get to a point when you can’t be bothered dealing with these people. The rescue was something I set up to look after cats in my own time, just two or three, not 17. I don’t get how someone could dump their family pet in the first place.” Despite the closure, Amanda was satisfied with the work she has done over the past four years. “In the last year I re-homed over 100 cats so I feel I did make a difference.”

If Nelson’s claim to the country’s “beer capital” crown needed any more evidence, the results of the latest beer and brewer awards have provided it in spades. The New Zealand People’s Choice Awards, printed in the Australian-wide Beer and Brewer magazine, are dominated by Nelson bars, brewers and businesses, winning 23 awards between them. The Sprig & Fern has won best beer venue, best small bar for its Milton St franchise, best cider, best microbrewery/beer company and its owner and head brewer, Tracey Banner, was picked as brewer of the year. Stoke won best beer, for its Bomber Bohemian Ale, and finished runner-up for best brew bar, and third for best micro-brewery/beer company. Its brewer Sam Wilson was runner up to Tracey as the country’s top brewer. Other local businesses also got in on the action. Matt Duncan from Founders Brewery was voted as runner-up in the best

Oh yes, Oh Blok have done it again. The Garin College band with a Nelson College drummer has taken first place in the Nelson Smokefreerockquest final for the second year in a row, now they’re hoping to secure a spot in the national final. Oh Blok, which is made up of five members; Kieran O’Connor, Louie Persico, Paddy Sanders, Robbie Day and Sam Butler, were the last of 12 acts to take the stage, and according to judge Ryan Beehre of Minuit, they were a “real cut above”. Ryan says the quality of their all-round performance was what handed Oh Blok their second win in as many years. “After last week I thought Oh Blok were the favourites and their songs were really good, really catchy. There was some really great talent here but I think they just had that little bit extra that said ‘yep, they’re an easy choice’,” he says. Keyboardist Paddy says the win “felt so good” and was a “big relief ”. “We came into this competition with a huge advantage, having the mindset of just wanting to have fun. When we came up on stage we just wanted to play the music we enjoy playing.” Vocalist Kieran says Smokefreerockquest is always the biggest gig of the year, so the band just wanted to make the most of performing in front of a

sold-out crowd. The task now was to qualify for the national final in Auckland in September, a feat Oh Blok failed to do last year. The top two acts from each regional final can submit a video in the hope of being selected in the final six, which means runner-up Fire Without Permit (Nelson College and Waimea College) is also in with a chance. For reaching the top two in Nelson, both bands won music gear from the Rockshop. The same goes for the top two acts in the solo/duo category where Garin College continued its dominance, with 14 year old Gabriella Atkinson edging Nelson College for Girls’ Zi Shaw to take the title. Gabriella says she grew up with music all around her and has always wanted

to be a musician. “My dad Kevin was a full time musician on the road for 25 years and he’s been a huge influence on me - I look up to him so much,” she says. “When I’m writing songs, I try to write lyrics I can relate to, so I can connect with the song and believe what I’m singing, so it can relate to other people as well.” Zi didn’t go home empty handed though, being named as the People’s Choice Winner, which was voted by text. Founded by Nelsonians Glenn Common and Pete Rainey 26 years ago, Smokefreerockquest continues to provide a platform for the country’s top young musicians, and as a judge, Ryan says the quality across the board lifts every year.

Chook show something to crow about Nelson poultry breeders are crowing about their egg-cellent results at the Heartland Poultry Show held in Timaru earlier this month and are hoping to stay at the top of the pecking order at this weekend’s Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Association Show at the Hope Hall. Barry Bensemann recorded his best result in 40 years of breeding poultry when his spangle game bantam won the Best in Show at Timaru and the top prize money of $1000. Rodger Buschl’s white leghorn won the Best Light Breed, while one of the association’s youngest members, Cameron Taylor, won a champion’s ribbon for his muscovy ducks. It is also a chance for breeders to share ideas and exchange breeding stock. The show will be held in the Hope Hall on Main Rd Hope from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 1.30pm on Sunday. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children with families $5.



As a builder and volunteer fire fighter, Keith Thawley doesn’t blush easily, but as the compliments flew at his gold star dinner last week even he felt a little “embarrassed”. “It was just about over the top,” he joked. “Very, very humbling.” The dinner was to celebrate Keith’s 25 years of service in the Stoke Volunteer Fire brigade and he arrived in style. Keith and his wife Helen were picked up from their home in a hot rod before being put in a helicopter and flown to Saxton Pavilion where the dinner took place. Keith says it was a special night. “It was an absolute awesome day. I was very honoured.” Keith started as a volunteer in 1989. He was a builder at Scott Construction and was building the brigade’s bar when some of the volunteers asked him if he’d like to join up. Twenty-five years later Keith is still working at Scott Construction and still a volunteer. “There’ve been

but the biggest one I’ve been to was the Majestic Theatre fire in the 90s.” Stoke Volunteer fire chief Allan Hoult says Keith has been a vital member of the team. “He’s been a huge asset for the brigade, not only for his fire-fighting skills, but also his building skills around the station. He’s contributed a lot.” The gold star award goes along with the honorary life membership he was given last year from the Stoke brigade.

Stepping out in Tahuna This year’s Stepping Out couldn’t have gone off any better than it did last Sunday, say its organisers. The event was all about getting out and about and exploring Tahuna, being active and trying new things. Community development facilitator Jo Lavington, was thrilled with the turn out to the event which, after four years, is still going strong. “It went really well, the weather was stunning and we had really good participation numbers

at all the activities.” Stepping Out in Tahuna is "a great day out for the family", with the opportunity to take part in several of the activities that the Tahunanui community has to offer, says Jo. It didn’t matter if you’d never played bowls before or had never even heard of disc golf, it was all available for free on Sunday. The end of the day was also celebrated with around 20 prize draws, thanks to the generosity of local Tahunanui businesses.

Wedding show a hit with brides-to-be

Tuesday, May 6: Paddy McMahon has searched high and low for Volume 36 in the 20 Solid Gold Hits vinyl collection. From Dunedin and Christchurch to Motueka and Takaka, in second hand yards and the Richmond Mall, but the album has continued to elude him – until now. At five past eleven on Wednesday night, the day the Nelson Weekly came out, Paddy got a call that would see his Solid Gold Hits collection finally complete, which has delighted both him and his wife. Tuesday, May 20: A 73 year old man was lucky to get out of his Main Rd Stoke house after it caught fire on May 19. He suffered facial injuries and smoke inhalation, but made it outside the house before being taken away by paramedics. Fire Investigator Craig Piner says the fire was believed to have been started when the owner fell asleep while smoking. The cigarette was left to smoulder before the man woke up to find his bed on fire. Craig stresses the importance of having working fire alarms in houses, there are models available for those hard of hearing.

Bridal heaven would best describe this year’s Nelson Wedding Show. The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology was the venue for the event and it was packed, not just with a range of exhibitors but with in excess of 400 members of the public, eager for ideas and expert advice for their wedding day. Owner/operator Sharron Page-Moreteton was extremely happy with the turn out the wedding show received. “It worked out really well. I’ve had good feedback from the exhibitors, they’re all really pleased with the premises and how everything was setup.” The Nelson Wedding Show hosted a diverse selection of exhibits to make any couples’ wedding day a success.

The Nelson Creative Fibre Group and Grey Power Nelson didn’t realise they were starting something big when they launched their charity drive to provide woollen hats for chemotherapy patients at Wellington Hospital. The group started knitting hats for the patients last October after one of their members, Olwyn Mulligan, suggested they should do something to help. Now group president and Grey Power volunteer Ann Bell says they have sent around 500 to 600 hats to the unit thanks to the generosity of knitters all over Nelson and around the country. “Olwyn’s daughter works in the chemotherapy unit at Wellington and she asked if we could knit a few hats for the patients. Now we have people all around Nelson and even in Wellington knitting for us and we are up to five or six hundred hats. “This week I took 65 hats to Nelson Hospital to get delivered to Wellington and two weeks before that I took in 86. It’s such a great response and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped out.” Although their campaign is non-profit, patients at the chemotherapy are donating a gold coin for every hat, which is used to buy wool or passed on to teen cancer support organisation Canteen. Anyone who would like to donate woollen hats can drop them off at the Grey Power office, at 33 Putaitai St in Stoke.

Jacks Navy winner thriller over Motueka

While teams who play outside had to contend with the unsavoury elements on Saturday, there were numerous players who were grateful that they had the use of Saxton Stadium. Game three of the first round was keenly contested, as teams pushed for top place and the opportunity to gain promotion. In Grade 2, Motueka High School held the top spot on goal differential from Waimea College 10A with eight points, however the evergreen Jacks Navy were nipping at their heels on five. Jacks played the majority of the first quarter with only six players, and each and every one of the players on court stepped up to play their most productive quarter, when they outscored their college opponents to the tune of 11 to 5. The Jacks “dead-eyed dick” shooting duo of Sheila Hunter and Marie James found their range early and were faultless in the first quarter. Juniors seize trophy back from Marlborough Nelson’s junior tennis players have won the Gardiner Trophy for the third time in four years. The Gardiner Trophy is the largest junior tennis fixture on Nelson Bay Tennis Association calendar and is contested between players aged 10 to 16 years old. In total, 32 juniors from Nelson competed against Marlborough in singles, doubles and mixed doubles at Tasman Tennis Club on Sunday. Marlborough won the trophy last year, but were no match for Nelson who pulled out all the stops to win 36-20. The Nelson 10 year olds dominated their age group with a final score of 14-2. Ryan Mairs and Kvido Tayerle showed particular fortitude, coming back from 5-2 down to win 9-8 against Oscar Sandford-Jury and Liam Blackmore. However, the Marlborough 12 year olds proved too

Reels need to be washed on the outside and taken apart to clean and oil the inside. Clean all internal parts of the reels then lightly oil them. During the process look for worn or broken parts that need replacing. Also, remember to loosen the drag off on the reels when you are storing them. Now is also a good time to think about replacing the nylon or braid on your reels. Many a good fish is lost to nylon and braid that hasn’t been changed for ages. Sunlight, salt water, nicks and abrasions all take their toll and the fish will always exploit any weakness they can find. Even though it is winter, the fishing will be going off at French Pass and D’urville Island with some great groper caught recently. Locally, the fishing has been quite good around Cable Bay, Pepin Island area with reports of kahawai, gurnard, blue cod, trevally and the odd snapper.

With winter weather now upon us, a lot of us put away our fishing gear for the season and wait for the warmer months to reappear. So before you do that, now is a good time to do a little preventative maintenance work on your fishing gear, like your rods and reels. It is also a good time to organise and stock your tackle box. You can even make your fishing checklist so you won't forget anything the next time you go. Work on them now so they will be ready when you next head out in those warmer months. It is a good idea to clean rods with a damp rag and inspect the wrappings on guides. Also, run a piece of cotton through the guides to check for rough places and cracks, especially on ceramic guides. Those kinds of places can cut your line, and it will happen when you are fighting a big fish. The wrappings can fail at the worst possible moment, too. So replace bad guides. Check the reel seat and make sure they are holding the reel tight. Oil any threads and bolts that tighten,

Both teams enter the match having won every game so far this season – including Nelson’s big win on the road against St Bede’s College in round two. Nelson is currently in fourth place on the Press Cup standings after the side’s 40-10 win over Roncalli College on Saturday, trailing third place Marlborough by just two points, with a game in hand. The Nelson versus Marlborough clash will be the first time the two teams have met since last year’s final, which Marlborough won 15-11 at Lansdowne Park. The Nelson Croquet Association’s AGM was interrupted by the presentation of two honorary life memberships, which were awarded to Manly Bowater of the Hinemoa Croquet club and Betty Winterburn from the Richmond club. Manly has been playing Croquet for 28 years, ever since he and his wife took it up just after they were married. “We wanted to start something brand new that neither of us had any advantage over the other,” says Manly. “And we’ve both had a good long successful playing time.” The presentations had been kept a secret from both Manly and Betty who were overwhelmed when they were called up in front of the gathering and given a certificate and a bouquet of
